YAP, FSM – The Yap State Legislature welcomed students and chaperones from Bael Elementary
School during an educational field trip to the Legislature chambers on May 25, 2026, at 9:30 a.m.
The visit included 18 students from grades one through eight accompanied by four chaperones. The
field trip provided students with an opportunity to learn about the legislative branch of government
and the role of elected officials in the State of Yap.
Speaker Nicholas Figirlaarwon greeted the students and recognized members present during the
visit. Members in attendance included Vice Speaker Theodore (Ted) Rutun, Resources, Education,
and Development Committee Vice Chairman Liyon Sulog, committee member John Taweryan, and
Finance Committee Chairman Pius Talimeisei.

During the visit, the students and members sat together in the Legislature chambers while the Speaker and members described their roles within their respective committees. Members also discussed the purpose and functions of the Yap State Legislature, including the legislative process and the role of committees in reviewing measures affecting the State.
Students were given the opportunity to observe the Legislature chambers and engage in discussions
with the members regarding government operations and public service. Refreshments were provided following the visit. Before departing, the students and chaperones presented the Speaker and members with a local fruit basket as a gesture of appreciation.
